Is Online Gambling Legal in Bahrain?
No. Bahrain’s Penal Code, issued by Decree-Law No. 15 of 1976, makes gambling a criminal offence in Article 308, which sets the penalties both for gambling and for running a place where gambling happens. There is no gambling regulator, no licensing system and no legal casino, lottery or betting operator in the country, so no form of online gambling has a legal route in Bahrain.
Online play is handled through the same Penal Code together with Law No. 60 of 2014 on Information Technology Crimes. In an October 2026 review of electronic gambling cases, a Bahraini lawyer noted that criminal liability depends on each person’s role: running a platform, organising bets, taking part, or committing fraud through it. The same review pointed to the practical limits on enforcement when platforms are hosted abroad, including tracing money and obtaining electronic evidence across borders.
How Bahrain Enforces Its Gambling Ban
Enforcement in Bahrain has mostly targeted gambling that happens inside the country. In November 2018, police in Manama arrested 32 people for gambling after a video of the game circulated on social media, confiscated cash and referred the case to the Public Prosecution. In 2021 Bahrain took part in Operation SOGA VIII, an Interpol operation against illegal football betting that led to around 1,400 arrests across 28 countries in Asia and Europe. Cases involving online platforms can also be brought under the Information Technology Crimes law.
How International Online Casinos Work for Players in Bahrain
Every casino on the list is licensed by a regulator outside Bahrain, and that licence is what a player can actually rely on: it sets the identity checks, the withdrawal rules and the body that hears a complaint. Because no Bahraini authority supervises online casinos, the overseas licence is the only form of oversight there is, and our guide to online casino licences compares what the main regulators require.
Two points in a casino’s terms deserve attention from Bahrain. Casinos list the countries they restrict, and a player from a restricted country can have winnings voided even after registering. And identity checks usually come before the first withdrawal, so having documents ready keeps a payout from stalling. The broader trade-offs are compared in licensed versus offshore casinos.
Casino Bonuses for Bahraini Players
Welcome offers on the cards are shown in euros. The Bahraini dinar is pegged to the US dollar, so a euro-priced bonus changes value in dinars as the euro moves against the dollar, while a dollar-priced one holds steady. The rollover decides what a bonus is really for: a BD 100 bonus with a 35x rollover means BD 3,500 of bets before the bonus turns into cash. Slots usually count in full toward that figure, while table and live games often count for less, and free spin winnings tend to carry their own rollover and payout cap. Every offer that accepts Bahraini players, with its rollover beside it, is on the Bahrain casino bonuses view.
Payments in Bahraini Dinars
The dinar is one of the highest-value currencies in the world, which makes the conversion on every deposit and withdrawal more visible than in most markets: a fee of a few percent on a BD 500 withdrawal is a noticeable amount. International casinos set their own payment options, from cards and e-wallets to cryptocurrency, and the methods each one takes are listed with the other casino payment methods. Bahrain’s central bank regulates crypto-asset firms operating in the country, but that framework covers financial services, not gambling.
Do You Pay Tax on Gambling Winnings in Bahrain?
Bahrain does not levy personal income tax on individuals, so there is no income tax return in which winnings would be declared. That does not change the legal position on gambling itself, which remains a criminal offence. For a comparison with countries where winnings are taxed, see our guide to tax on casino winnings around the world.
Land-Based Casinos in Bahrain and the Gulf
There are no casinos in Bahrain, and none of the other Gulf states had one either until the United Arab Emirates changed course. In 2023 the UAE created the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority, and in October 2024 Wynn Resorts announced it had received the country’s first gaming licence, for Wynn Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, a resort of more than 1,500 rooms scheduled to open in early 2027. Bahrain has not announced any similar plan.
A Short History of Gambling Law in Bahrain
Bahrain’s current Penal Code was issued in 1976, replacing an earlier code from 1955, and its gambling article has kept every form of betting illegal since. As the internet spread, Law No. 60 of 2014 on Information Technology Crimes extended the toolkit to electronic offences. Enforcement has continued against local gambling rings, as in the 2018 Manama arrests, and through international cooperation such as Interpol’s 2021 football betting operation.
Responsible Gambling and Help in Bahrain
Bahrain has no gambling helpline or self-exclusion register, since it has no legal gambling market to attach them to. The tools that do exist sit on the casino account itself, such as a deposit cap, a cooling-off break or a full self-exclusion, and they work best when set before the first deposit. Anyone worried about their gambling can speak to a doctor or mental health professional, and Gamblers Anonymous holds meetings online in English. Countries with licensed markets add a national layer, described in our page on national self-exclusion registers.
The Future of Online Gambling in Bahrain
Nothing points to Bahrain licensing gambling soon. The change in the region is coming from the UAE, whose first casino resort opens in 2027 under a dedicated regulator, which makes it the Gulf state to follow for any shift in policy. Elsewhere, Azerbaijan shows the opposite direction, with fines for players and tougher penalties for operators adopted in 2026; our pages on online casinos in the United Arab Emirates and online casinos in Azerbaijan cover both approaches.
