Is Online Gambling Legal in Tanzania?
Yes, and Tanzania licenses it by name. The Gaming Act, Cap. 41, in force since 1 July 2003, provides for an internet casino licence and an internet sports betting licence, and the Gaming (Internet Gaming) Regulations 2022 set the rules for online play. The Gaming Board of Tanzania issues the licences, and dozens of companies hold online licences. The Act applies to gaming in mainland Tanzania.
The rules are written for operators. A Tanzanian licensee must keep its primary server and an administration centre in mainland Tanzania, and running gaming without a Board licence is an offence under the Act. Casinos licensed abroad also accept Tanzanian players, and those are the casinos listed on this page.
Casino Payment Methods in Tanzania: Mobile Money, Cards and Bank Transfer
Mobile money is built into Tanzania’s internet gaming rules. A player at a licensed operator nominates an account with a bank, a financial institution or a mobile network operator, and the accepted methods include mobile phone transfers, recharge vouchers, cards, electronic and wire transfers and cheques. Cash is not allowed through the nominated account.
Services such as M-Pesa and Airtel Money are part of everyday life in Tanzania, but an international casino chooses its own payment options, and many hold balances in dollars or euros rather than shillings. Whether a given casino takes mobile money, cards or crypto is listed on our casino payment methods page, which helps when the method you use at home decides where you play.
Tax on Casino Winnings in Tanzania
At a Tanzanian licensed operator, online casino winnings are taxed at 15%. The operator withholds the tax when it pays you and passes it to the tax authority by the seventh day of the following month, so the amount that reaches your account is already net. Operators pay their own gaming tax on top, 25% of monthly gross gaming revenue for internet casinos.
A casino licensed abroad does not run Tanzania’s withholding system, and tax rules on gambling wins vary widely: how different countries tax casino winnings puts Tanzania’s 15% in context.
Playing at an International Casino From Tanzania
Tanzania gives players at its own licensed operators a set complaints route: the operator has 14 days to decide, the player then has 14 days to take it to the Gaming Board, and the Board decides within 30 days. At a casino licensed abroad, the regulator that handles a complaint is the one named on the card instead.
That is why the licence comes before the bonus. What a foreign licence does for a player in Tanzania depends on which authority issued it, and the regulators behind every casino we list, with the casinos each one licenses, are on our casinos by licence page.
Responsible Gambling in Tanzania
Tanzania’s internet gaming rules require licensed operators to offer self-exclusion, and a player who excludes is not reinstated for six months unless the Board approves. Operators must also let players set deposit or wager limits, with the seven-day wait before any change takes effect. At a casino licensed abroad, the limits, time outs and self-exclusion on your own account do the same job. The toll-free number 0800 110 051 is the one licensed gambling adverts in Tanzania must carry.
Finding the Best Online Casino in Tanzania for You
Read the licence on the card first, then check the practical side: a currency that suits you, a payment method you already use and a reputation for paying on time. The bonus comes last, with its wagering beside each offer. Each of Tanzania’s neighbours has its own rules, and our list of online casinos by country shows how Tanzania’s selection lines up with Kenya, Uganda and the rest of East Africa.
