Is Online Gambling Legal in Ireland?

Ireland is in the middle of moving to a single licensing system. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 set up the GRAI, which has been operating since March 2025. Its first licences, for remote betting, took effect on 1 July 2026, and since that date offering online betting to Irish customers without a GRAI licence has been an offence. Gaming licences, which will cover online casino games, are expected to follow in 2027 to 2028, each stage starting with a ministerial commencement order. Until then there is no Irish licence for an online casino. Playing at one is not an offence for Irish residents; the Act’s rules are aimed at operators.

What the 2024 Act Brings for Players

As licensing rolls out, the Act adds protections familiar from other regulated markets. A National Gambling Exclusion Register is planned, so that one self-exclusion covers every GRAI licensee; it is not yet running, and it will not reach casinos licensed abroad. Gambling ads are banned on TV and radio between 5:30am and 9pm, and adults must opt in before receiving gambling marketing. Licensees may not offer inducements to a particular person or group, and the Minister can restrict or ban other inducements by regulation.

Payment Methods for Irish Players

The international casinos that accept Ireland cover the methods most Irish players already use. Visa and Mastercard are taken almost everywhere, alongside Skrill, Neteller and Paysafecard. Revolut and Apple Pay appear at many sites, and Trustly and PayPal at some.

Think about the way back before you pay in. Casinos generally send winnings to the method you deposited with, Paysafecard cannot receive withdrawals, and some welcome offers leave out e-wallet deposits, which the bonus terms state. Every method and the casinos that accept it are on our casino payment methods page, and casino deposit and withdrawal fees explained covers what each can cost.

Getting Paid Quickly From an Irish Account

Most delays happen before the money moves. Casinos usually want ID and a proof of address before the first withdrawal, so uploading them when you register means the first payout is not held up; casino account verification lists the usual documents. Next comes the casino’s pending time, from near-instant to a few working days, then the method itself, where e-wallets usually beat cards and bank transfers. Weekly or monthly caps can also split a large win, which casino withdrawal limits explained walks through. If a payment stalls, start with why casinos delay withdrawals, or compare our fastest paying casinos, filtered to Ireland.

Casino Bonuses for Irish Players

Offers on the cards are in euros, so there is nothing to convert. A €100 bonus at 35x needs €3,500 in bets when the wagering counts the bonus only, and €7,000 with a matching deposit when it counts deposit plus bonus. For no rollover at all, wager-free bonuses pay winnings as cash; free spin bonuses come with their own spin value and caps; and no deposit bonuses are the rarest and smallest. Each list shows only what is open to Ireland, and a few casinos accept Irish players without including Ireland in their promotions.

Tax on Gambling Winnings in Ireland

Irish players pay no tax on gambling winnings, so a casino win has nothing to report on a tax return. The exception is someone who gambles as a trade, who can be assessed differently. Help With Gambling in Ireland

The Gambling Awareness Trust runs a national helpline on 1800 936 725, open 24 hours a day. The HSE Drugs and Alcohol Helpline, which also covers gambling, is on 1800 459 459 from Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 5:30pm, and Extern Problem Gambling offers free specialist counselling. Until the national exclusion register is running, self-exclusion works casino by casino, through the deposit limits, time-outs and exclusion settings in each account. How registers work elsewhere is compared in self-exclusion registers explained.

Playing is not an offence for Irish residents. No online casino holds an Irish licence yet, as GRAI gaming licences are expected in 2027 to 2028.
